swissbäkers Opening in Allston

swissbakers pretzel roll

I first tried a swissbäkers pretzel roll at Cambridge’s Kendall Square Farmers Market last summer. I savored every bite and asked where they were located. The girl at the stand said they were in Reading (a bit of a hike from Boston), but that they were opening an bigger bakery in Allston in early 2013. Well, the time is here and I couldn’t be more excited.

Last week I visited the new swissbäkers location (168 Western Ave, Allston) with the Boston Brunchers for a blogger preview event. We saw the space, met the family behind this great company, and tasted a variety of offerings.

Even last week the location was beginning to look finalized. And see the red cow? You can try to name it at their grand opening party tonight, Thursday, February 28, from 5-8pm (see flyer below).

swissbäkers is truly a family-owned business that prides itself on natural ingredients, caring employees (called co-entrepreneurs, rather), a positive cafe experience, and authentic Swiss food. Tomas and Helene, along with their sons, Tobey and Nick, started the business seven years ago in their home. They then moved up to a 400 square-foot baking area in Reading, MA. But, as Tom explained to us during our visit, they felt it was the time to “stay small or go crazy”. And this location is truly a leap – the cafe is beautiful and spacious, and the baking area in the back is huge!

In the image above you’ll see a side room off of the main cafe with one wall covered in a picture of Lucerne, Switzerland. That gorgeous scene is a real place. As in people live there (including Helene before she moved here!). Someday I will visit Switzerland.

This is what the counter looked like during our visit, but by now it’s polished and ready for business.

Here’s one of three bakery areas in the back. We sampled baked goods in the rooms where they’re made, which was a fun tasting experience.

Oh, you want to see the food?!

From bottom to top: ham and swiss croissants (phenomenal); pretzel rolls (you already know how I feel about these, they’re a must-try); cheese, fruit, and crackers; pajazzo bread (the most natural bread you’ll find outside of your own kitchen)

Bottom to top: assorted cookies including leckerli dipped in chocolate (an amazing spice cookie from Basel); berliners (more on this below); chocolate croissants

This is the inside of a chocolate berliner. They’re available in apple, apricot, blueberry, chocolate, cinnamon, and raspberry. The one I tried is chocolate (my obvious first pick), but I also ate a raspberry one the next day that was fabulous. I’m not one to count calories. I just eat, exercise a little, eat, and repeat. But a fun fact about these doughnut-like goodies: because they’re made with all-natural ingredients, including butter, and the frying process doesn’t turn them to oil balls like some other doughnuts, there are only 150 calories in one of these. So seriously, try one. They’re a great example of how Swiss baked goods are very light, while at the same time full flavor.

We finished our tasting with these great sandwiches on pretzel rolls (yes, I was happy, another pretzel roll!). Renee from Eat.Live.Blog. had told me how much she loves the salami, butter, and pickles sandwich, so I was very excited to try that out. It absolutely lived up to my expectations.

At the end of the evening we were all given these great red totes, which are given to guests who make a $20 or more purchase. Then, when you bring your bag back and spend at least $9, you’ll receive a free item. I love promotions like this (and it’s just a great bag), so I’m excited to use it.

Thank you to the Boston Brunchers for setting up this preview event. It was a special opportunity to learn about the company and see their new space. These are the types of places I love to check out on EatingPlaces, so it was fantastic to be part of this. I hope you’ll visit soon and I’m confident you’ll find something you love!
